New Delhi [India], 29 August (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi called para-athlete Nishad Kumar on Sunday to congratulate him on winning a silver medal in the high jump event at the ongoing Tokyo Paralympics.
“PM Shri @narendramodi called @nishad_hj and congratulated him on winning the silver medal. Nishad thanked PM Modi and also appreciated the PM’s continued encouragement to para-athletes,” he tweeted. SAI Media.
Kumar took silver in the high jump event, creating a new Asian record of 2.06m and scoring the second silver for India.
American Roderick Townsend took gold while Dallas Wise shared second place with Nishad. Townsend made the 2.15m jump while Wise recorded a 2.06m jump. Nishad and Wise both finished on the same mark, but Nishad had crossed the 2.02 mark on her first try while Wise caught two.
Indian Rampal Chahar finished fifth with a 1.94m jump.
Earlier in the day, Indian parata table player Bhavina won silver by losing the gold medal match to Chinese Zhou Ying 3-0 in the women’s singles – Class 4 in Sunday’s Tokyo Paralympics.
With this silver medal, Bhavina is the first ever table tennis player to win a Paralympic medal for India and the second female athlete after PCI chief Deepa Malik to achieve this feat. Deepa had won silver at Rio 2016 in the women’s shot put. (ANI)
